This month I jumped on board and created a kit for the STS Blog Train, Hint of Spring. I personally think these color are gorgeous, and so I redid my blog ware with my part.You can download my part of the kit here. It is with Wiki so there should just be a button to click ( fingers crossed:) ). If you scroll down a little I made a freebie to go with my shaped paper clip tutorial with this kit.

Creating a shaped paper clip {freebie}

Today l'm going to share a tutorial on creating shaped paper clips, using Photoshop Elements I'll be using 9 but just about any program will work. Note that clicking on the pictures will bring up a window with their full size.

1. Create a new document (ctrl + n), name it shaped paper clip, make it what ever size you want, I'm using 12*12, double check that the resolution is 300, color RGB, and the background is transparent, click OK.

2. Create you cutom shape. First select the custom shape tool (A). Then choose your shape(b) and color(C). Finally draw a shape just a little smaller than you page.

3. Dublicate the shape (ctrl+j) (a), rename them shape and clip (b), free transform 'shape' (ctrl+t) to make it 90% of its origonal size (c), accept the change by clicking the checkmark (d). Right click on first 'shape' and then 'clip' and select simplify.

4. Delete the center of the rim. ctrl +click on the thumnail of 'shape' to select it. Then select 'clip' and press Delete.

5. Increase the rim size by first selecting the 'clip' then holding down alt while dragging the little box out till it is 110% bigger.

6.Connect the rim to the shape by first creating a new layer and dragging it to the bottom (A), then (B) selecting the brush tool, and using either the size variable or the bracket keys ([=+, ]=-) to find a size that fills the gap and finally clicking once on the new layer to connect the 2.

7. Merge all of the layers together by right clicking then selecting merge visible.

8. Group (ctrl+g) a paper to your newly made clip and layer some elements. Add drop shadows and bevels and you ready to.

Below is a free circular paper clip. Right click and choose save as to download it. l made it with my portion of Hint of Spring feel free to Use it for Personal Use, but please give credit to Flower Pot Designs.

Are you wanting to learn about Photoshop and Photoshop Elements? Then why not join in on Scraps N Pieces FREE Beginner Classes?

These FREE classes will be a 6 week course for those who digital scrapbook in Photoshop and Photoshop Elements. It will be a very basic course, so if you have some experience with the programs, you will want to wait for our PS and PSE Technique course that begins in February. Class size is LIMITED but we will try to offer is a couple of times per year. Classes will be held in a private area at the SNP forum. Assignments will be posted at the beginning of each week and you will have a week to do your "homework" and post your completed assignment. You can work at your own pace to complete it anytime during that week.

Classes will begin on January 2nd and go through February 11th.

Classes will cover:

Week 1 - Organizing/downloading/unzipping/making file folders and understanding Photoshop Tools and Menus

Week 2 - Understanding and manipulating layer - Scraplift (posting completed layout at the SNP gallery is required)

Week 3 - Making a layout from scratch (posting completed layout at the SNP gallery is required)

Week 4 - How to use a quick page (posting completed layout at the SNP gallery is required)

How to create neon text and freebie

Variations:

use a color other than white for the text, this will let more of the neon shine through (depending on how light your color it) and the entire text rather than just the outside will be neon.
skip the reflection (pics 7&8) to create more of a clean look
try using different outer glows like noisy or radioactive for a different look

To speed up the process a bit I have made a layer that can be used instead of painting. Simply create your black background, white text, add the glow, then place this over the top and change the layer style to color. To download double click on it to pull it up in a new window, then right click and hit save as picture. Then save it somewhere were you might see it again.

It is a really nice kit and can be used both as a nice girly kit or male as well. I chose to go male with my layouts:

Creating a stroked frame/ freebie

This is a tutorial on how to create a page with frame going all the way around it, known as a stroked border.

1. Select the rectangular marque tool and draw a selection around your page about 1/4th " from the edge.

2. Create a new layer and select it. Edit> Stroke Outline Selection.

3. Set the size to 20 pixels. The color to a color from your layout, the placement to center, the style to normal and the opacity to 100%.

4. Choose the eraser tool and select square brushed from the drop down menu then find a solid square brush. Erase any parts of the image that you don't want the frame to cover.

5. Using the vertical text tool create your title.

6. Using the rectangular marque draw a selection box around the text. Select the frame layer and press the delete key.

Variations:

To get a more varied look fallow the same steps but lower the frames opacity and duplicate it a couple times. Then rotate them all a bit in different directions and varry the opacitys.
Try using the liquify filter ( Filter > Distort > Liquify) and use the 'turbulance tool' to add wavy look.
Duplicate a small flower or element and put it on the frame to give an elegant feel.
select the frame and use varied opacity brushed to give it a grainy feel.

Making a CT Card

I made these cards for the STS July Hybrid Challenge to help me keep track of my CT duties.
This is the first one for the Lovely Creations CT. I made it with Divalicouse by Andriana's Cafe.

Here is what the text says.

1. Create a document ~8” wide and ~4” wide.

2. Place a patterned paper from the kit Divalicious by Andrana’s Cafe.
3. Using ribbon or stitching create a line across the top for the kit title.
4. Use an alph to put the designer name under that.
5. Create a grid using lines the width should be the CT creation
requirements +1 and the height should be the posting requirements +1.
6. Label acordingly.
7. Print out and trim.
8. punch very small decorative holes to the left and right of each row.
9. Place adhesives on the back and matt with cardstock.
10. Punch ribbon threading holes and thread ribbon through and tie in
any boxes that are NA.

To use write the name of the kit on the top line. Write the date of release in the top left box. As you complete things and post them to galleries check them off in the apropriet boxes. For example when LO1 is done and has been posted to Yahoo I would check of the box between LO1 and Yahoo. When everything is complete sign on the top of the grid.

I also made one other one for Every EverAfter Moment Designs CT.

I made it with Candy Kisses by Manda Lane Scraps.

I also did an animation to go along with the tutorial.

1. Create a new page (4x3) and put a cardstock on.
2. Add a ribbon, ricrac or stiching to the top of the page to put the kit title on.
3. Under that spell out the designer name with an alpha.
4. Then add horizontal gridlines with a stich or ribbon. The number of places you are required to post +2.
5. Then add vertical dividers with a ribbon or stitch the number of things you create +1.
6. Add labels in the left column and top row.
7. Print and laminate for multiple uses.

The STS July blog train At The Park is gitting ready to pull out. Here is my part. It has 5 cardstocks and 5 papers as well as 11 elements. The image is linked to download. Live has changed it up, and I'm not exactly sure how it works if you arn't the document creator :) but you should be able to click the little i for information next to ATP(short for at the park) and then on the right colum click download. Same goes for all my past kits which should be there too.

If you post in any forums perhaps you have practice making your own siggys to spice it up. If you don't already have one you are in love with, here is one I made. The download link is here. Just add your name on the top of the tiles, you creative teams, blog name or whatever else strikes your fancy under it. Then "save for web", adjust the size to 150 pixels tall, save as a jpeg and upload it to a site like tinypic.com.

How to create a simple card.

OK maybe not so simple, but you know how real cards always have a funny or inspirational saying of some sort on the inside, and well I thought I might just share how I would do that.

1. Create a new document the size of your card, (I like 3x4). By pressing ctrl+n then entering your length and width into the boxes. Clap once if your screen looks similar to mine and press OK.

2. Press ctrl+o to open your background paper. I'm using my free kit Sunny Daffodils.

3. Add your background paper to your card by: selecting the move tool then dragging the paper onto your blank card.

4. Resize the paper to fit better onto your card. Still using the move tool, and dragging the corners in. Close the paper document by right clicking on it and selecting close.

5. Add any other elements or paper by ctrl+o to open them and dragging and resizing them onto your card front.

6. Add text by clicking on the T-text tool. Draw out a text box by clicking where you want it to start and releasing where it should end. I will place mine over my yellow paper. The foreground color will by default be your text color but you can change that by clicking on the color chip in the options bar.
Choose your favorite font in the options bar, and finally type your message.

7. Add the final touches to your card front- drop shadows and any other elements you think it needs.

8. Lets make a back and insides for the card. Click on the "image" icon. Then "resize" and finally "canvas". Then put the width of your card in the width box and height in height box. Then click on the bottom right arrow so that the canvas extends out and up only.

9. Decorate the other sides inside and out using the guide below, remembering that when folded the backside will be flipped, so any lettering will need to be rotated 180 degrees.

10. Print- file, then print. Ensure that the printer you want to print to is selected, and actual size is selected, and that your card is the only thing selected to print.

Finally press print. I have had the best luck printing on light card stock or heavy paper. When your card comes out of the printer cut it out using the front as a guide, it should be 6 by 8. Then fold in half first vertically and then horizontally. I hope this helped. Comment if you have any other questions.
